It was the year of the bicentennial, 1976, and JoAnne and Julius Shaw had decided to take a chance on a new concept - selling specialty coffee to consumers. They opened their first store in Dearborn, Michigan, and, in the 26 years since then, the company has grown into a multi-million dollar franchise business, with the headquarters based in Flushing, Michigan. By 1985 the company had eight retail stores, and the Shaw's began
offering franchise opportunities. Since then, Coffee Beanery has
expanded to 180 locations in 28 states, Guam and seven countries. The
company became an international company in 2001 with the opening of a
master franchise in Seoul, Korea. In 2002 Coffee Beanery opened in Chengdu,
China and will soon be opening in UAE, Bahrain and Dubai. Fiscal
system-wide sales for Coffee Beanery exceeded $51 million.
Kettering University in Flint, Michigan, recently awarded an honorary doctoral degree in management to Shaw. She was chosen for this honor because of her remarkable career in which she has exhibited an entrepreneurial spirit, nationwide success and elected leadership of professional trade associations. Shaw was a finalist in Inc. magazine's Entrepreneur of the Year program in 1989 and 1990, and was named Entrepreneur of the Year in Michigan in 1991. She has been inducted as a lifetime member in the Entrepreneurial Institute. In 1995, Shaw became the first recipient of the Bonny LeVine Award, given by the International Franchise Association to an individual who has served as a mentor to women. JoAnne and Julius reside in Michigan.
