50 Years of the Perfect Pour: The Coffee Beanery Story

JoAnne & Julius Shaw with Franchisee Ziad Bader

In the world of coffee, 50 years is a lifetime. It’s long enough for trends to come and go, for brewing methods to evolve from simple percolators to precision pour-overs, and for a small family dream to grow into a global legacy.

This year, we are incredibly proud to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Coffee Beanery. It’s a milestone that belongs to every barista, every franchisee, and every customer who has made us a part of their morning ritual since 1976.

But to understand where we’re going, we have to look back at how a single cup of coffee started it all.

Two Visionaries and a Dream: JoAnne and Julius

The Coffee Beanery story began in 1976, founded by the husband-and-wife duo JoAnne and Julius Shaw. At the time, the "specialty coffee" industry as we know it today barely existed. Most people were drinking whatever came in a tin can from the grocery store.

JoAnne and Julius had a different vision. They believed that coffee shouldn't just be a caffeine delivery system—it should be an experience. They set out to source the finest high-altitude beans, roast them to perfection, and bring the concept of a "gourmet coffee shop" to the heart of the community.

From Michigan to the World: The 1980s and Beyond

What started as a single location in Dearborn, Michigan, quickly struck a chord with coffee lovers. By the early 1980s, JoAnne and Julius realized that the demand for premium coffee was bigger than just one state.

They officially began franchising in the 80s, partnering with dedicated individuals who shared their love for the bean. This wasn't just about growing a business; it was about building a family of entrepreneurs. That expansion didn't stop at the borders—today, Coffee Beanery has grown from a local Michigan favorite to a brand with locations across the globe. Whether you’re in a U.S. suburb or visiting one of our overseas locations, that commitment to the "Perfect Pour" remains the same.

A Legacy of Flavor and Grit

As we celebrate our 50th year, we’ve been reflecting on the journey that brought us here. We recently marked this golden anniversary with a convention in Jamaica, where we took our franchisees deep into the Blue Mountains.

Standing in the town of Cascade and watching coffee being roasted in an iron skillet at the James Dennis Coffee House was a full-circle moment. It reminded us that while we’ve expanded globally since the 80s, the heart of coffee remains the same: it’s about the land, the people, and the craft.

Why 50 Years Matters

Over the last half-century, we’ve become known for more than just a standard cup of joe. We’ve pioneered flavors that have become household staples—from our best-selling Michigan Cherry to the decadence of Caramel Pecan Pie.

Through every decade, our commitment has remained unchanged:

  • Quality First: Only the top 3% of the world's coffee beans make the cut.

  • Family Values: We are still a family-owned business at our core, treating every franchisee and customer as part of the tribe.

  • Global Reach: From Michigan to international shores, we bring gourmet coffee to everyone.

The Next 50 Years Starts Now

To our wonderful franchisees who have been the backbone of this company since those early days in the 80s, and to our loyal customers who have fueled their days with us for fifty years: Thank you.

We’ve seen a lot change since 1976, but our passion for great coffee is stronger than ever. We have plenty of celebrations planned for the rest of the year, so keep your mugs ready. Here’s to the next 50 years of friendship, community, and, of course, the perfect pour.
