The island of Sumatra in Indonesia has been known for its coffee since 1696 when the Dutch introduced coffee plant cutting to the rich, fertile land. Arabica coffees of Sumatra are the only cultivated at the higher elevations. Sumatran coffee is unique due to Arabica beans being cultivated at higher elevations on the island since 1696, when the Dutch first introduced coffee plant cuttings to the fertile land.
